Electrical Engineer for Embedded Sensor Systems, PCB Designer and Firmware Programming
(Liverpool, UK)

Position Overview:
The Electrical Engineer will lead the design, development, and implementation of new sensor hardware, PCB design and embedded firmware for modular air quality and environmental monitoring systems. You will participate in the full product lifecycle—from concept and prototyping to field deployment and iterative improvement. This is a hands-on engineering role with opportunities for technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, prototype, and test custom sensor circuits and embedded systems for environmental and air quality monitoring.
  • Develop and optimize firmware for microcontroller-based embedded devices (C/C++), including power-up tests, control logic, and edge algorithm integration.
  • Design PCB to deliver robust, scalable sensor modules.
  • Perform verification, debugging, and failure analysis using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other test equipment.
  • Develop test firmware, software interfaces, and automated test procedures for sensor validation.
  • Integrate analog front ends, wireless communication (Bluetooth Low Energy, cellular- NB-IoT, LTE-M, LoRa, etc.), and peripheral components.
  • Document theory of operation, requirements, and user manuals; contribute to intellectual property documentation.
  • Support process improvement and participate in the transition from prototype to scalable manufacturing.
  • Mentor junior engineers and interns as the team grows.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 5+ years minimum experience designing and developing embedded systems, preferably for IoT, sensor, or related industries.
  • Proven experience with embedded firmware development in C/C++ and version control (git).
  • Strong background in sensor integration, analog/digital circuit design, and PCB layout.
  • Experience with microcontroller platforms (e.g., Nordic NRF chips, ESP32, ARM Cortex-M, Cypress PSOC, STM32).
  • Familiarity with implementing and optimizing edge algorithms on embedded devices.
  • Hands-on experience with hardware debugging and test instrumentation.
  • Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience developing environmental, weather, or air quality sensors.
  • Knowledge of wireless protocols (BLE, LoRa, Zigbee) and low-power system design.
  • Exposure to cloud connectivity, IoT platforms, or data analytics integration.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping and transitioning designs to manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of the Diptrace PCB design software is useful.
  • Knowledge of Zephyr RTOS and Nordic NRF chips useful.

Work Environment:

Software Engineer – Embedded Systems & IoT
(Dulles, VA)

Position Overview:
Join our Aeternum team to design and develop embedded software for next-generation weather, air quality and environmental sensors. You’ll work hands-on with hardware engineers to build robust, scalable sensor platforms using modern protocols and microcontrollers. This is a unique opportunity to influence architecture and technology choices as we scale our products for real-world deployment.

Essential Requirements:

  • Proficient in C and C++ for embedded systems
  • Strong understanding of embedded systems architecture and development
  • Experience with Zephyr RTOS
  • Knowledge of NB-Iot, Lte-M and LoRa wireless technologies
